Bread Sticks are a wonderful addition to any pasta dish. Use your imagination, go crazy. Chop up a little jalapeno peppers or roasted garlic cloves and add them to the dough. Sprinkle with coarse salt before baking. Add Italian seasoning to the dough. After baking spread with garlic butter, parmesan cheese, herbs. These may also take the place of popcorn on stay at home movie night. They can be bagged for in lunches or that trip down the hiking trail. Great served warm or cold. Add a dip such as cheese, salsa, or Italian salad dressing. You may even coat them with cinnamon and sugar for a really nice treat for the kids after school. You can make and pan this dough then freeze it. When you are ready to bake it just remove it from the freezer 1 hour before you wish to bake it. Then bake the dough as per the instructions below. Great for when you have unexpected guests for dinner.
2 cups warm water
1/4 cups sugar
3 tablespoons melted butter
1 tablespoon active dry yeast
4-1/2 cups bread flour approximately
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup melted butter
1/4 cup parmesan cheese mixed with butter
1 tablespoon fresh parsley or sweet basil finely chopped mixed with butter
Crushed Roasted Garlic mixed with butter
Combine the water, sugar and butter in a large mixing bowl. Sprinkle in yeast. Let rest for 5 min. or until yeast is bubbly.
To the yeast mixture add the salt and flour. Stir until the dough starts to leave the sides of the bowl and form a ball. You may have to add more flour or water a little at a time. Dough should be soft but firm enough to knead.
Spray a large cookie sheet with non-stick vegetable spray. Place the dough on the cookie sheet and press it with your fingers until it covers the entire cookie sheet. Spread melted the melted butter on top of the dough.
Using a pizza cutter or sharp knife, cut the dough in half the long way, then cut 9 times across the other way to give you a total of 20 Bread Sticks.
Sprinkle with your choice of toppings.
Let rise until double in size.
Pre-heat the oven to 375 degrees.
Place the cookie sheet in the oven and bake the Bread sticks for 15 minutes or until done.
Allow to cool slightly before serving.
